Patronages

An important part of the work of the Lieutenant-Governor and his wife is to support and encourage public and voluntary service. This is achieved through involvement with charities and other organisations.

About 100 organisations list the Lieutenant-Governor and his wife as patron or president. The benefits of the Lieutenant-Governor and his wife’s patronages include:

  • adding status to an organisation
  • increasing publicity through visits and their personal involvement

Patronages only last for the duration of the Lieutenant-Governor’s tenure. Sometimes the Lieutenant-Governor and his wife might take on a patronage relating to a specific campaign or event which only lasts a fixed length of time
