"Future Parliamentarians from across the Commonwealth will gather for Commonwealth Youth Parliament in Jersey

Aspiring young people from across the Commonwealth are to come together in Jersey’s States Chamber for the 9th Annual Commonwealth Youth Parliament (CYP)  on 25 February until 1 March 2018.  The CYP is made up of young people aged 18-29 from around the globe and provides a key Pan-Commonwealth experience and developmental opportunity for young people with ambitions of entering Parliament.

With 60% of the Commonwealth’s population aged under 30, the CYP is a leading programme organised by the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) and responds to the needs of its young constituents. The CPA recognises that young people have a proven capability to lead change, and are a vital and valuable investment for now and the future.

The CYP programme is designed to demonstrate to potential future Parliamentarians the fundamentals behind the processes of Parliament in key institutions which underpin democracy and good governance. In addition, it gives attendees a hugely valuable networking opportunity with other participants from across the Commonwealth, as well as with current young Members of Parliament and States Assembly Members who act as mentors throughout the week.

Mark Egan, Greffier of the States, adds that “We are delighted to welcome so many young people from across the Commonwealth to Jersey for this exciting and unique opportunity. The youth Parliament will allow young people to develop their leadership skills and experience our historic Parliament, as well as empower them to make a positive difference in shaping the future of their own communities”.

During the youth Parliament, participants will also have the opportunity to take part in parliamentary procedures as party representatives or independents; debate propositions on controversial issues and face the Press in a ‘mock’ media conference.”

The event was due to be held in the British Virgin Islands in October 2017, but was unfortunately cancelled due to the devastation caused in the Caribbean following Hurricane Irma. The Jersey Branch of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association was asked to assist and are delighted to be able to host the event."
